-----Update-----
We decided we couldn't be arsed to wait 10 months to earn a significant amount of money from mochiads, so mofunzone agreed to sponsor the game instead, even after release ^.^

Game Design, Programming - Me
Graphical Design (and lots of general input) - Pags

It's finished, fiiinally =]
(It was mainly held up by coursework, which recently died)

Everyone so far has said that it's really hard, but hey, i hate making easy games. Makes it more rewarding!

I'll probably write a better explanation of the game later, but i'm too tired at the moment. Just read the tutorial & stuff, it's all in there (i hope). And if you find ANYTHING wrong i'd really appreciate you telling me before this ends up all over the internet x.x

Oh, and the name is silly, yes. We had a fun game trying to come up with the most ridiculous name we possibly could, as is the tradition for 2D space games =]

I'm sorry about the adverts, but we wouldn't be able to spend the amount of time we do on this stuff if we didn't get paid (leaves no time for things like saturday jobs), and using an Ad network instead of getting sponsored by a games website means we get to keep all the rights to the game. I think there's some filter thingy you can put on to remove ads from the game in certain places, so i might try updating with that soon (i cant just remove the advert code from the game in the deviantArt version because then websites would run off with that version instead of the one with the ads).

Finally, thank you to everyone who tested it. I'll try and put a full list together later, but i think the prize for most bugs found goes to :iconleannecoleman:'s friend Will =]

Got to stage 12. That fight becomes bs. But so insanely fun. :) To get far, you really need to use the small ships and learn how to use them effectively. Tons of multipliers :D

THIS NEEDS A SEQUEL.

This game is AWESOME, I remember playing this when I was a kid. It definitely needs a sequel (ideally one where you can PLAY AS THE TESTUDONS).

also, you probably heard this a lot but the game is quite difficult but I like it that way. I could never get past around lvl 6ish but it's definitely very fun. Wish i could command my fighters though like to attack at will or stay close by me or something like that. great game though. one of my fav ^^

This game keeps on giving me a lot of idiotic levels early on (15 fighters vs 9 fighters and 3 destroyers), and the AI leaves plenty to be desired. Ships aren't programmed to know how to get fighters in front of them, they have poor intelligence when it comes to target priority, and they often get stuck going in circles (one level there was only me and a testudon against an enemy testudon and the two testudons kept going in circles that never got them in range of eachother. I was eventually able to pick off the testudon, but they need some kind of programming to prevent infinite circles). They also mindlessly follow you if you're the last one left, so if you have a destroyer you just need to get them in range of your missiles and they get annihilated while you take no damage. Some intelligence in attack plan would be great. Being given a unit limit and based on that you get to choose what ships you want to deploy would be great. Being able to give your units orders (like ordering destroyers to follow the testudons and defend them against fighter swarms) would be great too. Just some thoughts for an Azul Baronis 2. For what it is, it's a great game. I give it a 9/10 for problems listed above.

Haha, I agree wholeheartedly with pretty much every criticism here. The logic controlling everything in this game is actually incredibly simple and so crudely implemented that I can't even stomach looking at the code anymore XD

Thanks for your input though. I have toyed with the idea of making a sequel to this many times before, and you're talking about many of the things I would put the most thought into next time around. Maybe it's finally time to give the sequel a shot... Afterall, I am basically sat here doing nothing because coursework is too boring =]

This game is difficult to the degree of rediculousness. Quite often I find myself outnumbered 4 to 0 in the destroyer category. Also, would be nice if the Testudon wasn't rediculously effective against fighters (generally in space games with big ships the big ships have powerful weapons but can't hit a fighter to save their lives). Other than that it's a great game, kinda like a Homeworld for the poor gamer.

I always make stupidly hard games ^.^;

I figure that it still works, just that everyone fails to exactly the same degree. Also, pretty much everything is effective against fighters, just as everything is useless against a large number of fighters (that's the balance). You'll notice that the testudon has an extremely slow rate of fire, even if it does one-hit-kill most things.

I won't deny that the scenario generator throws out some real bastard levels though, apparently even some that are unwinnable (according to some reviews). Oh well, most of the stuff that didn't work in this game didn't work because i suppose the concept isn't complete. There's a large tactical aspect missing (as you have no control over your fleet), so if i ever make a sequel, that's probably what i'll address first.

Thanks for the comments though, and i'm glad you liked it =]

Thanks, I made a jump in its development, I'll post up a swf for you to check out sometime.

Now that I've got most of that math covered now, I'm having problems understanding how to stop doing onClipEvents... was Azul scripted all on the main timeline? Could you provide an example of a function that takes care of an attachmovie event for something like shots from a turret?

Sorry this comment is so late... actually I never thought of joining deviant art untill I wanted to comment on this flash game. Anyways, I've been working on a flash strategy game out in space for almost a year, and i have a few questions i'd like to ask you about scripting it in the most simplified way. I know most of the peices of code, but I know there's ways to cut them down so that when they go online, they don't get choppy...
1. Is it a good idea to put AS (2.0) into movie symbols so that everytime you 'attachmovieclip', the code works universally with the clip its been put into? (ex: you have the missile touch the ship (hittest) and there's AS inside the clip that will delete its ';parent' so that any clip holding this clip will be deleted on the 'hittest' )
2. I noticed some different versions of your game, do you know how to update your swf file after you've published it, and it's on the internet?
3. I noticed that your spaceships 'wiggle' left and right as they chase the player, I take this as a random variable that makes they're movements vary (or am I wrong), is there some way to simplify this into: a.follow player (dividing x,y coord. of both clips... (I learned this as the simplest 'following' code), and b. rotate to the angle that your own (enemy) ship is moving...
4. Also how much would the use of custom Classes effect the speed of the game (as opposed to not using any)?
-I have some more questions, but I don't want to take too much of your time. :)

Thanks for the help,
If I stated something strangely just ask...

1. No, you avoid putting code on movie clips wherever possible. Keeping all of your code centralised to the main timeline via functions and loops generally makes everything a lot faster, and ALWAYS makes it a lot easier to tweak, edit and fix.
2. You basically just have to email everyone and ask them to swap the file. The only other way is if your swf loads dynamically from a single location to the swf file that everyone else is hosting, but that would be difficult. To start with, you'd have to find a decent server to host the original swf file.
3. Sounds like you just need to look up basic pythagoras and trigonometry. The easiest way to do something is to understand the maths behind it.
4. I dont know much about custom classes in actionscript because i've never bothered using them for anything, but i cant imagine they'd bring much of a performance hit really, and would perhaps allow for some improvements

Hope i helped =]

you should make this dual screen so that two players can play it whether as enemies or as allies ^_^ that would be fun. and the screen is a bit small but u do get used to it :D i really enjoy the simple attacks though. and I wish you can command orient some few squads so they follow you. that's about what i have to say. but this is amazing! i wish i could learn how to make games like this.

A brilliant game! I love it when you charge into a big melee with your fellow ships, especially when there are many forces. You see lasers firing everywhere and large groups of ships splitting off the main force to attack the Destroyers and Testudons. Not only that, but by not having the significant advantage that you have in most games, when you get lots of kills (Blue baron! Quadrape! ULTRARAPE!) you know you must be really good at the game.

What would be cool:

Squads: One thing I would like if you had a squad which you could upgrade (like maybe buying a destroyer for your squad or giving speed bonuses to your squad etc.) I know that would go aganist the rule of not having a significant advantage, but you put some code so that enemy squads upgrade, so you don't have a unfair advantage.

Campaign: Maybe have a map where conquer territories and things?

More types of ships: Maybe a ship that is disguised as a enemy ship until it fires? A ship which heals friendly ships around it? A ship which could attack from very long distances? You could have tonnes of really good ship types.

Longer view distance: Basically, a bigger screen because you really can't see much in this game.

This game is brilliant, but if a couple of things get added in, then it certainly would get frontpage!
